Vain Imaginings

Vain Imaginings
Jul 21, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

Vain Imaginings. Maybe you have never heard that phrase. It was new to me in the last year. I’m sorry I can’t recall where I first heard it. In a nutshell, vain imaginings are when we daydream about an imaginary situation in which we ourselves look really good. I do sometimes laugh at the ridiculous scenarios that come to mind during my imaginings. But there is more that’s not so funny, and I believe it is a tool of the enemy – of Satan – to stoke our pride and create tension in our relationships.

Take It To Prayer

Take It To Prayer
Jul 18, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

"Take it to prayer." Has someone ever said that to you? I tend to say it a lot these days and only recently had the thought that maybe the other person doesn't actually know how to do that. It wasn't long ago when I would have struggled to understand what that meant as well. How many Hail Mary's did I need to pray? How many rosaries? Do I need to do a Novena? What does it mean to take something to prayer?

Awesome!

Awesome!

Awesome! I’ve heard that word used a lot – for a lot of different things. This cheesecake is awesome. That football game was awesome. You are an awesome wife. When we use that word, it’s because we think something is exceptional. But the actual definition of the word “awesome” gives us a deeper meaning. Here’s what the dictionary says: exhibiting or marked by awe; showing reverence, admiration, or fear. Another definition I found for AWE is a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. How do you experience the Awe of God?

Never Give Up. Never Surrender

Never Give Up. Never Surrender
Jul 11, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

How can we help someone love God? There are many approaches - good ones and bad ones. The key is to never give up on them. Never surrender to the lie that they are lost forever. Here are some ideas to help you discern how to work with God for those you love.

Fixer Uppers

Fixer Uppers
Jul 07, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

My sister and her husband bought a house they refer to as the Money Pit. They knew when they bought it that it would cost a lot to fix things, and they were right. It’s a fixer upper. They could see the potential even when it looked pretty bad, and they were willing to invest the time and money to make it a beautiful home. God is like that with us. We are the fixer uppers and he sees our potential.

Christianity is a Team Sport

Christianity is a Team Sport

"Christianity is a Team Sport." I heard that in a talk by Fr. Mike Schmitz and it gave me pause. The more I thought about it, the more I could see the truth in the statement. My walk of faith is not something I do alone. Never has been. Never will be.

Life in the Pews

This blog is a little different from my usual writing. It is a tribute to all the holy women of faith I have known throughout my life, most especially my mother, Rita Casey.

Curiouser and Curiouser

Curiouser and Curiouser

Curiouser and Curiouser. That's a quote from Alice in Wonderland, and is a fitting title for today's food for thought about curiosity – specifically about the benefits and risks of curiosity for Christians. J.K. Rowling gave these words to one of her Harry Potter characters: “Curiosity is not a sin.... But we should exercise caution with our curiosity." Sometimes I don't exercise caution with my curiosity. I have good curiosity and bad curiosity. Good curiosity draws me closer to God. Bad curiosity distracts me from Him and sometimes leads to sin.

Just One Step

Just One Step
Jun 23, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

If you are a parent, you may remember that first step taken by your child. When trying to teach them to walk, you didn’t start by telling them to walk across the room. You got close to them and said, come to mommy. You were encouraging them to take just one step. God is like that with us. He doesn’t give us a long list of things we need to fix in ourselves – and for me it would be a really long list. he tells us to start with just one step. He doesn’t usually give us a huge project to accomplish. He gives us just one step.

Holy Rest

Holy Rest
Jun 20, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian
We live in a very fast-paced world. If you are working or a stay at home parent, you are busy. Even if you are retired like me, you are probably just as busy as when you had a job. So no matter who you are or your season of life, you need regular holy rest.

Rough Edges

Rough Edges
Jun 16, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

I used to say that my dad had some rough edges. Don’t get me wrong, he loved God and served him well for many, many years. But he was still a little rough around the edges. If someone asked him to do something that he thought they should not have asked, he would tell me with annoyance, Why do they need that? I’m not going to do that. Of course, later he would go ahead and do whatever he was asked. It was like the story Jesus told about the two sons. The father asks each of them to do something. One son says he will do it but doesn’t, and the other son says he won’t do it but actually does it anyway. Dad was the second son. He often said what he thought, sometimes before thinking about it. That’s why I say he was a little rough around the edges.

I Can Work With That

I Can Work With That

My friend Joan has a gift of transforming what looks like trash into something beautiful. She found a rusty metal garden chair and buckets, and sanded and painted them. They now sit on her patio. She had an old Catholic missal, which is a book of prayers, and used the pages to create a piece of art. She has a wonderful gift. It's like she sees something and thinks, "I can work with that." I believe that God has the same thought about us. He sees our faults, our mistakes, even our sins and says, "I can work with that."

The Envelope

The Envelope
Jun 09, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

Each of us has the potential to be an envelope carrying a love letter from God to others in the world. We can be a plain Jane envelope, and beautiful wedding invitation envelope, or a dirty, damaged envelope that's been through the ringer. The important thing is the letter inside, the message of love from God.

Can I Get a Witness

Jun 06, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian
Imagine God saying “Can I get a witness?” That should not be too hard because we are called to be witnesses to Him in this world. The question is how to do that most effectively. We witness with both words and actions. This post offers ideas in both areas.

Big Buts

Jun 02, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian
It's not what you think! The Big Buts in this post are the exceptions we claim for ourselves that keep us from following God with our whole heart, soul, strength, and mind. What are the exceptions you think apply to you? How can you resist asking for an exception for God?

Not My Job

May 30, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

I used to have a job that I had held for many years. Over time, my responsibilities expanded well beyond what was in the job description. A new pastor arrived and noticed. He reined me in and forced me to stick to my job. He is very wise! I found that I have a tendency to try to get involved in things that are not my job  things like saving souls, fixing people, and solving other people's problems. I am learning what is not my job, and what is, so that I can better serve God as a witness in the world.

The Strongman

May 26, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

The actor Jason Mamoa is a big, strong guy who plays the superhero Aquaman. A fan posted a picture with him and explained that he was hugging her because she could not stand on her own. He offered to hold her for the photo so her wheelchair wouldn’t be in the picture. She said to him, "Thanks, but I am kind of heavy." He responded, "That’s okay. I am kind of strong." That story reminded me of God. Sometimes we, like the Jason Mamoa fan, think we are too much for God. We don’t lean on His strength. We sometimes need to be reminded that God is not just kind of strong. He is the ultimate Strongman.

You and What Army?

May 23, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

I saw a picture in my mind of a little child standing and facing a great army. I was the little child and the army I faced was the evil of the world. The evil was great and I was very little. And then I saw an even greater army of warriors behind me. They were strong and bright and confident and filled with God’s power. And I, the little child, stood up taller and with more boldness, no longer afraid or discouraged by the evil I faced.  I had God’s army behind me. And so do you!

Sorry Not Sorry

Sorry Not Sorry
May 19, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian

Have you wondered if you are sorry enough for your sins? There are many reasons we might be sorry, and not all of them are perfect. I'm sorry because I got caught. I'm sorry because of the consequences. I'm sorry because I need something. How can we know that the sorrow for our sins is sufficient for God's mercy?

Never Not Working

May 16, 2023 by Colleen C Orchanian
There is a commercial with Patrick Mahomes and Troy Polamalu where the tag line is “Never not working.” Patrick runs into Troy working in all kinds of places and each time Troy says, "Never Not Working." That commercial got me thinking about how God – through the Holy Spirit – is Never Not Working.
